That's a heck of a testimonial... Well you are a rarity on this planet using such an oldish cubase on windows 98 I also think that was the last that could be used on windows 98. Still available is Making Waves which is a pretty cool DAW & super cheap as well & it can still be used all the way down to windows 95 but will not work on windows 8/10/11... It has great workflow like old Fruity Loops but different very musical capable...
Even simply dragging a single sample onto track in Making Waves there's many ways to make musical-

Very good MIDI capabilities as well...
As to dimxl well it really depends what you want to do with the sampler... Personally I like to sample a VSTi with HighLife then make that into a soundfont with every semitone sampled for max quality. Then use either Kontakt 2 or One of the Oscillasoft plugs like XFact2, Universal or Fiction. The Qscillasoft plugs are very complex & also every param has automation available which makes the soundfont VERY musical just like using a Synth, not stagnant at all. Except much less CPU is used than a Synth...
Here you see XFact2 in SVArTracker alotta stuff on it & Many FX panels along the bottom including several sequencers. You see Param list on left look at how small scroll cursor is the list is a mile long & much. much can be LFO driven-

And yes, NOT synthedit as I do see where you are coming from on that...
Sometimes I use Muon DS-404 because I can easily convert to it's format. DS-404 works well in both Ultrano Dreamer & Spacetoad, here in SVAr-

It may appear it has many params for automation but these are for 16 different timbrals so very limited each one...
Not a fan of old Emagics Logic which always seemed like a dildo app however do like the EXSP24 sampler which also accepts soundfonts it will convert the soundfont to the EXS format... It has quite a few params to automate to make the sound musical not near as much as XFact2-

For taking a singular WAV & making the unusual out of it Loomer Cumulus is pretty rad. You can adjust what segments in it to sequence each with it's own FX & modulation with crossfading great for making pads & atmospheres-

None of the above are synthedit... For a more conventional sampler an old good one was Vsampler, I have also tried CreamWare Volkszampler but it's a bit dated, nowadays I still thinks TAL-Sampler is quite tops & it works even in super-crappy hosts... Then yes, there are the shortcircuits 1 & 2 which are good. Even though it's in Reason the NN-XT has been bad-ass since day one. I still use Reason 3.0 it's nice that EVERYTHING works like it should 100% and with low CPU-RAM you can have 40-60 tracks no needing any bouncing...
