Eventually tracked it down to a copy of Uhe Ace, which was strange as I'd never had issues with it, but switching to use multi core resolved it (also windows anti malware has seemed to run a lot recently...).
Seems like 5.2 will be out soon though. Let's hope they get the last few but ironed out. Rewritten UI must be very complicated.

I had an email today from Bitwig about 5.2 and came here to see if it was announced out of beta.
(The update looks good but possibly I'll wait to activate my upgrade until 5.3, as I'm pretty happy with stability right now.)
.I think 5.2 is not essential but I do like scult and the compressor+.
On my side I bought 3 yearly licences during the big discount. I am married with Bitwig now
